Police have launched an investigation into the death of a 49-year old man who reportedly died by suicide in Mukuru slums.

The deceased, Wilson Kamande’s body was discovered yesternight by a neighbor dangling in his open room.

The neighbor then alerted the area police who later collected the lifeless body to City Mortuary.

A source privy to the incident told Ghetto Radio that the deceased separated with his wife three weeks ago over domestic squabbles that forced Kamande to move out of matrimonial house.

It is reported that Kamande rented a house a walkable distance from his matrimonial house

“Mzee alipata pesa ya nhif elfu ishirini, na ndio akashinda akikunywa na kuwa mkali”, a neighbor said.

The deceased is survived by three children the eldest being 19 years.

Cases of suicide have been on the rise this year and authorities blame the trend on mental distress.  Data from the World Bank puts suicide mortality rates in Kenya at 6.1 people in every 100,000, with men being in the highest risk category, with 9.1 men in every 100,000 affected.

Under Section 226 of the Penal Code, attempted suicide is an offence punishable by a two-year imprisonment, a fine or both.
