The National Hospital Insurance Fund is investigating 80 facilities countrywide suspected to be involved in fraud.
According to Gilbert Osoro, The manager benefits and contracting at NHIF, the fund has been losing a lot of money to fraudsters
“The fund has been losing money to fraudsters who are using the funds by impersonating card holders, also through faked surgeries by clinics but we have been able to identify 80 clinics with the help of authorities and through complaints made by the public.”Said Osoro
Already 7 clinics have been suspended by NHIF for engaging in different types of frauds with the matter already in court.
Osoro further said they are incorporating the use of technology to curb fraud cases
“We are using technology to fight rising number of fraud cases by alerting our customers through sms notifications once they use our services in hospitals and also sending undercover agents on the ground to investigate fraud cases” Osoro said
The fraud cases have currently shifted from the large cities into the interior in areas like Central, Coast and Nyanza.
