Harambee Stars left-back Aboud Omar has expressed gratitude having represented the country in the 2019 AFCON held in Egypt.
Speaking exclusively to Ghetto Radio sports desk Aboud says that though they failed to qualify for the round of 16, it was a great experience to have represented the country at such a stage.
“Representing the country in the 2019 AFCON was a great opportunity having experienced a drought of 15 years from the competition which is a major stage for us players to market ourselves and the country.” Said Aboud.
Aboud further described playing against Champions League winner Sadio Mane and 2 times English Premier League winner Riyadh Mahrez as an unforgettable experience but admits it was tough marking such experienced players.
Although the team failed to meet their target of qualifying for the last 16 in the tournament they are grateful for the massive support from the Kenyan fans and the government.
The Mombasa born left-back currently plies his trade in Romania with Sepsi OSK having played in the Kenyan Premier League for Bandari FC and Tusker FC early in his career before getting spotted by a scout during a Harambee Stars match with Morocco which propelled him to higher levels.
Aboud says that the level of Kenyan football has risen in the recent years and with the current trend the country will regain the high ranking status it had in football.
“I can say Kenyan football will continue developing to greater heights with the right kind of leadership and investment been put in place.
Right now am happy that players in Kariobangi Sharks and Gor Mahia have had a chance to play with teams in the English Premier League giving them the much needed exposure.” Said Aboud
The Harambee Stars left back has also said playing at AFCON was important for Kenya’s football because it has proved more can be achieved with right investment.
“With the proper preparation and funding we have shown that Kenyan football gets to the desired stage in future though it will not be an easy task.” Added Aboud
Aboud encourages other young players to continue working hard in the sport though the situation maybe hard and to make sure that they are disciplined at every step of the way because it is key in football.
