Africities Convention Centre Site Employees Call Off Strike

Striking employees working at the Africities Convention Centre site at Mamboleo Showground will today resume back to work following an agreement with the China Jiangxi International.

According to the Ministry of Labour Report, the workers grievances were discussed and agreed upon in a late evening meeting between the workers representative, the company and officers from Ministry of labour.

Benard Ochieng’ from the Ministry of labour confirmed to Ghetto Radio that the ongoing construction will resume this morning and no staff will be sent away with their demands met.

“We went to the site, yesterday where there was a go slow following the workers strike. We talked to the management, site manager, the employees and we came to an agreement. The issues the employees were raising were resolved and we came to an amicable agreement that today in the morning all the employees were returning back to work,” says mr. Benard.

Mr. Benard advices the employees that incase they are facing any other challenge again then they should report to their office.

” We believe that their wont be an issue again. Incase they will still face any challenge then I would advice that they visit our office so that they can chat a way forward,” he adds.

The employees had on Thursday down their tools demanding for a good salary package claiming that they work for long hours and only paid sh.400 per day.

“We are only paid sh.400 per day here. The economy is high and the cash is not enough to meet our needs. We work for long hours and their is no extra pay even during weekends and holidays. Let the company follow the law and work with us accordingly,” said Alphonse.

The employees under John Onyango and the group claims that the site has no Human Resource manager hence employees are fired without a letter of approval.

The demands the employees demanded also include,” provision of protection gears, employees to be categorized in two groups skilled and unskilled where they also want to be paid sh.1200 and sh.600 respectively.”

The employees wanted the China Jiangxi International to provide them with a contract letter to tame unnecessary dismissal of employees.

The concluded by demanding that they get a double pay during holidays and get extra pay for Weekend works with working hours reduced.
