Airbnb operators in the Country who have not yet paid the Tourism levy have been urged to do so by the Tourism Fund Corporation as it intensifies its efforts to collect unpaid levies.

The corporation warns that those who will not pay will face unspecified consequences.

With an estimated 40,000 Airbnb listings in the country, the corporation reveals that only a mere 400 Airbnb hosts have complied with the levy requirements, leaving the majority unregistered and non-compliant.

The 2.0% tourism levy is intended to bolster the growth of the tourism industry, which plays a pivotal role in the nation’s economy.

“The levy fund which is 2.0% of the products that we get goes into product development. Stakeholders are really eager to discuss about solutions that generates from the partnership,”

Additionally the corporation says it will engage the Airbnb Africa to facilitate the registration of all Airbnb hosts on the platform.

This partnership the corporation says aims to streamline the registration process and encourage more operators to pay.

Furthermore Airbnb hosts who have not yet registered with the Tourism Fund Corporation are strongly advised to visit the nearest tourism fund office for prompt registration

The surge in Airbnb business in the country can be attributed, in part, to Kenyans seeking additional income opportunities amidst the economic challenges faced in recent times.

The Tourism Fund Corporation, responsible for financing critical tourism-related projects says it has been striving to secure levy contributions from all Airbnb operators to support sector development.
