The alchemist club in Parklands has been closed temporarily to allow investigations into claims of racism at the club.
A statement from the Club says that the temporary closure comes following a viral video of a man being removed from a queue that had particular people with a different skin colour.
“After careful consultations with the Nairobi County Government. The Alchemist has agreed to close its close its doors while a thorough investigation is conducted over the next few days,” reads the statement.
The club has also acknowledged lapses within its security personnel implying a review.
“That being said, the last few days have shown us that we have much work to do to hire a new security team and develop new systems and processes to ensure that every single person feels welcome.”
The club has however denied claims of racism saying that the management has never had a policy of discrimination towards its clients.
“The Alchemist was founded to be a home to creatives, entrepreneurs and customers of all races and backgrounds. Over the last six years, we have shared our space to the public and hosted thousands of events across fashion, music, art and food,” reads the statement.
“Our management has never had a policy of discrimination towards the people that have walked through our doors,” the statement further reads.
The investigations will largely review the night of May 20th to determine if the guests in the viral video were denied entry and if there was a policy in place to have separate lines for guests.
The investigators will also review footage and also conduct interviews on the people in the footage.
