The team managed by the animated figure of Gennaro Gattuso, were in impressive form and they took the lead through a wonderful goal from Hakan Calhanoglu.
Their comeback spirits were dampened when Danny Welbeck seemingly dived some minutes before half time. This resulted in Arsenal being awarded a penalty by Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson. Welbeck proceeded to put the ball past Italian prodigy, Gianlugi Donnarumma.
Gattusso did not take the penalty incident well. He proceeded to voice his frustrations to the match officials. He also aggressively threw a ball at Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal, when the ball went out of play.
In the 67th minute, Gattuso swaped Curtone for former Blackburn Rovers striker Kalicinic who made an immediate impact with a powerful header that was dealt with by Arsenal’s custodian, David Ospina.
Arsenal struck again in the 71st minute when Granit Xhaka’s powerful shot was too much for the Milan’s shot stopper, who deflected it in. Arsenal continued with their attack and Welbeck sealed his brace in the 86th minute.
This win gives Wenger some breathing space ahead of the international break. It also rewarded Gary Southgate’s faith in Welbeck. The 27 year old, England international has been called up for national duty. He will be expected to replicate his fine form in the international stage.
