Kenya’s Angella Okutoyi has emerged as the 2023 African Games women’s singles champion following a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Egypt’s Lamis Abdelaziz in the final.
She Becomes became the first Kenyan woman to win the title in 46 years since Jane Davies-Doxzon won it in 1978.
The 532nd-ranked player has also secured the Olympic ticket but still needs to break into the top 400 before June 10th to totally secure a place at the Olympics.
Okutoyi, who in 2022 won the Wimbledon title for the doubles junior category, thrashed Egypt’s Lamis Al-Hussein 6-2, 6-4 to win the African title.

Angella Okutoyi’s Incredible Journey
The 21yr old became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title at the girls’ juniors Wimbledon event partnering Rose Marie Nijkamp.
At the 2022 Australian Open, Okutoyi became the first representative of Kenya to win a girls’ junior singles Grand Slam match.
African Championship
In the semifinals, Okutoyi faced off against Egypt’s Mayar Sherif, a global tennis powerhouse ranked 70th worldwide.
The match extended over an epic duration of 4 hours and 27 minutes, with Mayar Sherif Clinching the first set 7-5.
Kenya’s Celebrated Okutoyi claimed the second set 7-5 and edging out Sherif in a competitive third set 7-6.
Leading up to the semifinals, Okutoyi showcased her dominance on the court, starting with a first-round bye.
She then went on to defeat Zambia’s Naomi Chileshe and Egypt’s Mostafa Rafaat with identical scores of 6-6, 3-1, and 6-6, 3-3, respectively.
