A huge fire erupted on Saturday night in Kijiji slums Langata leaving a trail of destruction.

Eye witnesses say the fire was caused by a gas explosion causing many houses to be destroyed in the inferno.

The fire also caused widespread panic among the residents who were almost retiring to bed.

“Tulikuwa tunawatch Tv, tukaskia kelele za watu…kuangalia nje ni moto..it was terrifying.watoi walikuwa wanalala ikabidi niwaamshe…naskia ni gas ilicause moto,” An eye witness said.

Emergency response teams including Kenya Red cross and the Nairobi city county fire brigade arrived at the scene and contained the fire.

“Advisory: Southlands Kijiji Fire, Langata As efforts to contain the fire progress, a reminder to nearby residents: Please refrain from putting children to sleep until the fire is extinguished to minimize smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide exposure. Your safety is paramount,” Kenya Red Cross statement read.

Despite their efforts, the fire consumed property worth of millions, leaving many families homeless and distraught.

Kenya Red Cross Issue Warning

The Kenya Red Cross issued a warning to parents and guardians to keep their children awake until the fire was contained.

“The situation has been successfully contained thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Nairobi City County fire team, the Kenya Red Cross, and Community Based Disaster Response teams,”

The fire in Kijiji slums comes on the heels of another tragic incident earlier in the week, where seven people lost their lives and 300 others sustained injuries due to a gas explosion in the Mradi area of Embakasi
