Auditor General visits Kisumu County Assembly against backdrop of Ksh. 2 Billion Audit Query

Auditor General Nancy Gathungu yesterday visited the Kisumu County Assembly days after she questioned the financial mismanagement in Kisumu County amounting to Ksh. 2 Billion.
The report also indicated that Ksh. 786 Million could not be accounted for in the the year 2018/19.
Gathungu held discussions with Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Elisha Oraro and members of the Assembly’s Public Investment and Accounts Committee on how to collaborate to improve accountability in the county.
Gathungu also agreed to partner with the house leadership to build a capacity of members of the county assembly and staff to strengthen the Assembly’s oversight role.
“I would request your office to give me your staff members on audits group who will work closely with us. This will enable us develop a program for capacity building for Kisumu county majorly on representative audit as you requested… If we don’t have staffs who are well capacitated then we will not be in a position to provide information needed for making informed decisions,” she stated.
“So we are ready and willing to collaborate closely with your stakeholders because this will enhance the relevance of the report that we do and issues that needs to be addressed, “she also stated.
Speaker Oraro also reiterated Gathungu’s sentiments saying that the assembly through the Public Investments and Accounts Committee is ready to work with the Auditor General’s office to strengthen its oversight role.
