Nairobi County Assembly MCAs have rejected the governor Mike Sonko’s memorandum seeking to amend the budget from Ksh. 37.5 billion to Ksh. 31.6 billion.
Out of the 123 members of the county assembly 88 voted NO to reject Sonko’s bid with elected MCAs taking the lead.
In the memorandum sonko rejected Ksh. 1.6 billion to NMS for inspectorate services,transfer of Ksh. 1.3 billion for Ward Development Projects including health funds.
“Honourable speaker I beg to report that the committee of the whole house has considered the governor’s reservations and rejected them without amendment,” John Kamangu told the House .Kamungu is the chair of chairs in the assembly.
In the budget NMS will get Ksh. 27. billion which is the lion share compared to Ksh. 8 billion for Sonko for the remaining functions at the county government.
The move was applauded by the minority side led by Peter Imwatok of Makongeni and Moses Ogeto of Kilimani.
“Fifty one members of ODM have voted to reject the impunity that Sonko is trying to exercise on the people of Nairobi more importantly our party’s steadfast. What is right will stand with what is right. We are also happy with Jubilee members despite being locked somewhere for them to be able to vote the way the president and former prime minister want,” Imwatok said.
“We were not coerced by anyone from ODM we believe in what’s right. Sonko must know that the time for change is now, Nairobians want development not sideshows,’’Ogeto added.
