  • Nominees will be announced in early August, following last year’s ceremony, which saw some controversy.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony on September 22nd will make history by presenting an equal number of awards to both men and women, a move towards greater equality in football recognition. This includes new awards for the best women’s goalkeeper, young player, and top scorer, mirroring the men’s categories. Following a controversial ceremony last year, organizers hope this inclusive structure will lead to a more unified celebration of football’s best.

Equal Recognition for Men’s and Women’s Football

The prestigious Ballon d’Or award ceremony for this year will be held on September 22nd, organizers announced on Monday. A significant change for this edition is the equal number of awards presented to both female and male players for the first time in the event’s history.

New Awards Introduced for Women Players

The organizers, France Football magazine and UEFA, revealed that new award categories for women will be introduced at the ceremony, which will take place at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France.

These new awards will recognize the best women’s goalkeeper, the best young women’s player, and the top women’s scorer in either club or national team football.

This expansion means that the upcoming Ballon d’Or ceremony will feature a total of six awards for male players and six corresponding awards for female players. In addition to these twelve individual player awards, there will be one additional prize, the Socrates Award.

This special award recognizes individuals, whether male or female, for their actions that promote solidarity within the sport and the wider community.

The list of nominees for all the Ballon d’Or categories will be officially announced in early August, giving fans and the football world anticipation for which players will be in contention for the coveted prizes.

Ceremony Follows Year of Controversy

The previous year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, held in 2024, was marked by controversy. Real Madrid, a prominent football club, organized a boycott of the event. This boycott was reportedly a result of their learning that their Brazilian forward, Vinicius Junior, had not been selected as the winner of the best men’s player award.

The award ultimately went to Rodri, a midfielder playing for Manchester City. This incident highlighted the intense emotions and rivalries surrounding the Ballon d’Or, one of the most highly regarded individual accolades in football.

The organizers will likely be hoping for a smoother and more universally accepted ceremony this year with the introduction of equal recognition for both men’s and women’s football.
