Former Makadara lawmaker Benson Mutura has been elected new Speaker Nairobi County Assembly replacing Beatrice Elachi who resigned.
Mutura garnered 99 votes beating the other five in the race who got zero votes.
Deputy speaker Kamangu Munyu who presided over the election declared Mutura a winner, an exercise that was conducted through zoom technology.
‘‘Having garnered all the 99 votes, I therefore declare Benson Mutura the new speaker …he got 100% votes with the rest of candidates getting zero votes,’’ Kamungu declared.
In his acceptance speech Mutura has pledged to bring unity in the house saying the assembly under his leadership will work closely to steer development.
‘‘I want to thank you all for voting me in as your new speaker, am ready for the job and i know what to do having been in this house before..soon i will invite the house leadership for a special sitting so that we can see how to move forward,’’Mutura said.
Meanwhile Ken Ngondi one of the candidates who banked on ODM members faulted the Party for whipping its members to vote in one direction.
Ngondi said ODM party could have given direction to its members to vote Mutura and that the move denied him his democratic right.
Mutura is now faced with a hilly test of bringing together MCAs who have been at war over different interests.
