Joy rendered the air after former Boston Marathon champion Benson Kipruto led a Kenyan sweep at the Tokyo Marathon early Sunday setting a new course record after clocking 2:02:16 as Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge finished a distant 10th.

Kipruto lowered Kipchoge’s course record of 2:02:40 which was set two years ago.

Timothy Kiplagat who finished second clocked 2:02:55 while Vincent Ngetich came in third clocking 2:04:18.

After the 5km mark, Kipchoge was running in the leading pack in the fifth place and was looking comfortable running behind Timothy Kiplagat.

Meanwhile Sutume Asefa Kebede of Ethiopia won the women’s race in 2:15:55 this also being a new course record.

Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru came second with 2:16:14.this saw double Olympic champion Siffan Hassan being fourth clocking 2:18:55.

The race took place less than a month after the world record holder Kelvin Kiptum died in a road accident.

Kiptum and Kipchoge were expected to face off for the first time at Paris Olympics.

In Tokyo Marathon was Kipchoge’s first race after Kiptum’s death.

He paid tribute to Kiptum just before the race.

“I am sorry and it’s unfortunate that he left us,” he said.

“His career was in high spirits when he was really running on a high level.it was unfortunate,”
