Beyond Zero Campaign to better lives of less fortunate
Wilfred Kimitet and Valentine Kipketer took the lead in the third edition of First Lady Half Marathon held at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday.
Kimitet crossed the line at 1:00.38 shaving off 50 seconds from the previous time held by Moses Kosgey, who won last year’s race in 1:01:28 as Kipketer emerged victorious in 1:09.08.
Kipketer beat known Jepkosgei who finished second in 1:09.09.
Beyond Zero Campaign Marathon was launched with its greatest purpose being that of raising funds to put up mobile clinics in aid of women and children who are less fortunate.
This edition the initiative is expected to raise Ksh 200m for the campaign.
The Marathon that was flagged off by Kenya’s First Lady,Margaret Kenyatta at the Nyayo Stadium attracted close to 40,000 participants.
The race also saw the first lady participate in the 10km race.
During the launch of this years edition,in Statehouse on the 26th January 2016,the First Lady said more than Sh540 million has so far been raised since the inception of the Half Marathon in 2014 and 36 out of the 47 counties have so far benefited from ambulances through the Beyond Zero campaign.While this year’s Campaign sought to raise over Sh250 million, with Sh105 million expected to come from entry fees.
Also present was Rwanda’s First Lady Jeannette Kagame,Vice President William Ruto and his wife.
Former Kenyan athletics greats Catherine Ndereba, Edith Masai and Lorna Kiplagat were not left out.
