Bodaboda Operators Demand Justice For Colleague Gunned Down By Police
Bodaboda Association of Kenya has called for a quick probe into the murder of Bodaboda operator Rabin Ogeto who was allegedly killed by a police officer after a scuffle at Kirinyaga Road Nairobi.
The Association Chairman Ngara branch Paul Ateto says they will not burry their heads in the soil as police continue to kill them.
According to Ateto, Mr. Rabin was not the one who had a difference with the officers but was only phoned by a friend who was cornered by the officers.
It was at this point that Rabin intervened questioning the officers why they demanded for a bribe.
‘‘It is painful that one of us can just lose his life like that …it means all Bodaboda riders in Nairobi are not safe and something needs to be done. Rabin left his house and came to town just to hustle for his family only to meet his death in the hands of people mandated by law to protect him,’’ Ateto said.
‘‘Unfortunately Rabin was not the one involved in the scuffle directly with the police, he met his death when trying to fight for his colleague who did not have Ksh. 50 bribe for police,’’ he told Ghetto Radio News.
Yesterday Bodaboda Association of Kenya Ngara branch held a meeting with Deputy County Commissioner Starehe Mr. Ouma who assured them that stern action will be taken once the investigation is done.
‘‘We met with county commissioner who assured us that the government is on top of the matter and as riders we have decided to give them time and should they fail then we shall announce later our next stop,’’ he added.
Meanwhile The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also launched probe into the shooting after it received complaints.
IPOA , in a statement over the weekend , said a Rapid Response Team had already been dispatched to obtain all relevant information that will clear the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
“Where fault is found, the Authority shall not hesitate to make recommendations, including but not limited to prosecution,” IPOA said.
