Campaign Launched To Create Awareness On How To Handle Children With Special Needs

A Community Based Organization in Nyalenda, Kisumu County has launched a two day campaign to create awareness on how to handle children with special needs in Kenya.

Seed Power CBO is conducting the campaign in partnership with an organization called the Little Light House from USA, KUNNOPET and Young Turks CBO.

The two day campaign which started yesterday has brought on board teachers, nurses, social workers, CBOs, NGOs and other organizations.

Speaking during the launch of the campaign, KUNNOPET chairman Lawrence Otunga says  that they are going to train the teachers on how identify those children and also organize for early intervention measures.

“We are doing this because most of these children have been neglected in the society for long. Parents are not aware on how to deal with them. We also noted that teachers are not aware of emerging issues on how to deal with these children with special needs,” said Otunga.

Otunga added that the conference aims at equipping the teachers with skills on how to deal with the children and classroom and school level.

“Our expectation on this conference is that these representatives will go back and advocate for children with special needs . Create awareness about them, identify their needs and come up with interventions to help them succeed in life,” said Seed power CBO Executive director Beldon Okeyo.

The campaign was launched at the Mama Grace Onyango Social Hall.

The campaign is dubbed, Identifying children with special needs and interventions to help them succeed in life.
