Cane growers decry importation of cheap sugar by manufacturers

Kisumu Cane growers are demanding swift action against unprincipled traders importing cheap illegal sugar into the Country.

The cane growers claim that the importation of cheap tonnes of sugar into the country affecting locally made sugar.

Speaking to Ghetto Radio News the growers claim that the imported sugar has made their canes lose market hence plunging them into losses.

It takes long for one to sell sugarcane to our factories hence the can loose quality and quantity.

“I waited for six months for my sugarcane to be harvested. The quantity reduced drastically, previously I used to harvest 163 tonnes in three hectares of land which I did not receive after the 6 months. I got 102 tonnes, ” said Hillary cane farmer.

Some claim that sugar manufacturers are mixing the cheap sugar with the manufactured ones reducing the quality of the sugar.
