Chaos erupted today at Mtindwa market after two groups of traders clashed over market space.
Drama started after a section of traders whose stalls were demolished on Tuesday morning by Kenya Railways bulldozers were given space where other traders had already occupied.
The traders then in a bid to protect their spaces then blocked the new traders claiming that the space was not enough for the new traders.
“The market along the railway line was demolished on Monday, so after the demolition the market committee brought us to Sonko Road, but we don’t know if this will work,” said a trader.
The market committee Vice Chairman Yongo Ibrahim however described the chaos as a product of greed from traders who do not want to share their spaces.
Ibrahim says that they have taken measurements and subdivided the spaces for everyone.
“What is happening here is a result of greed from some traders. So out of greed, some people do not want their colleagues to be awarded spaces. But everyone must get space, because they all have mouths to feed and bills to pay,” said Ibrahim.
On Monday Kenya Railways bulldozers demolished a section of Mtindwa market after traders encroached its land.
Traders in Githurai also suffered the same fate on Wednesday after their stalls were brought down.
