A chief in Butere Kakamega County has launched a crackdown on underage girls who got pregnant and got married in the area.

Chief Edwin Shitanda says that starting Monday, he will be walking from home to home to get those girls that are not going to school.

Speaking at a funeral, Shitanda stated that he already has a list of those girls that got married off when schools closed during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Many of our girls got married off during corona after they became pregnant during corona,” said Shitanda.

“So our women, if you know you have an underage girl who is not going to school, please ensure that she starts going to school,” he stated.

Shitanda stated that the government has currently put measures to ensure that even pregnant girls attend school.

“There are plenty of desks that are very spacious to accommodate our girls. So please come back to school, we will take care of you,” he stated.

Even girls with lactating children have been urged to attend school.
