A police officer is fighting for his life after he was beaten by an irate mob in Mombasa’s old town area.
According to reports, the officer 31 year old Gerald Sumba, had tried arresting several people for not wearing face masks when the angry mob turned on him.
Reports also indicate that he was in plain clothes with locals assuming he was a civilian trying to solicit for bribes.
Photos shared from the Friday evening incident shows the officer lying in a pool of blood outside a local shop.
Police officers from Stapol central visited the scene of the incident and discovered the victim was indeed a police officer attached to the Tononoka police station working at the Coast General Hospital.
He was rushed to the Coast General Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment as investigations into the matter commence.
Police are also pursuing one more person said to have been with the officer during the incident.
