A section of Dagoretti residents in Ndonyo area are protesting against a tannery that was set up in the area claiming that it is endangering their lives.

According to the residents, the Yetu Tannery is emitting toxic waste from the chemicals used in the tannery.

The residents claim that some of them have contracted chest problems as a result of the toxic waste.

They are now calling on the National Environment Management Authority to move in with speed and shut down the tannery.

“We are hurting, our children are complaining of chest pain all the time because of this tannery,” cried one woman.

“We never recover from cold here, we are petitioning the county administrators in Kiambu and Nairobi and NEMA to move with speed and shut down this tannery,” said the residents.

The tannery’s director Kehia Mwangi however denied the claims saying that they have observed all the environmental standards and that the tannery is not emitting any toxic wastes.

“There is nothing to worry about. Even us we eat here, we work here. We treat our chemicals according to the international standards. We make sure that all our chemicals are well handled and we have a proper chemical handling system,” said Mwangi.

The Yetu tannery is located near a slaughterhouse in Dandora.
