The search operation for the victim of the Pier Beach boat accident in Homabay was officially called off was yesterday after the recovery of two more bodies raising the death toll to 10.
Recovery efforts ended three days after boat capsized in Lake Victoria.
Homabay Sub-County Commissioner Jude Wasonga revealed that the vessel that capsized on Tuesday evening had 18 passengers on board with eight having been rescued alive.
“The exercise has been successful because since we started the search the coordination is very good as partners have responded so well. I can say the community also accepted the work and also volunteered during the process to support the work,” said Wasonga.
The search was conducted by a multi-agency team that included, Kenya Coast guards, Maritime authority and also fishermen who offered to join the search team.
Various locals leaders like ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga sent their condolence to the affected families calling on residents to practice maritime safety protocol to save lives.
Four people who were admitted at Homabay Referral Hospital were also discharged with two more remaining for further monitoring.
The boat is report to have capsized at 400m from the pier beach on Tuesday evening as it was headed Ndhuru Beach in Suba North.
