Ousmane Dembele, the dynamic forward for Paris Saint-Germain, was honored with the prestigious Ligue 1 Player of the Year award on Sunday. This recognition follows a stellar season where his pivotal contributions were instrumental in PSG securing their record-extending 13th French league championship and advancing to the highly anticipated Champions League final.

The announcement was made at the UNFP Trophies ceremony, an annual event that celebrates the pinnacle of French football talent.

Throughout the Ligue 1 campaign, Dembele showcased exceptional attacking prowess, leading the league with an impressive tally of 21 goals. His overall performance across all competitions was equally remarkable, netting a total of 33 goals in 46 appearances, including eight crucial goals in European fixtures.

Renowned for his blistering speed and intricate dribbling skills on the wing, Dembele emerged as a consistent threat for opposition defenses. His impactful performances effectively filled the void left by Kylian Mbappe, who had dominated the award for five consecutive years before his move to Real Madrid in the previous season.

PSG Manager and Young Talent Also

Adding to PSG’s accolades, their accomplished manager, Luis Enrique, was also recognized for his leadership, receiving the Coach of the Year award for his role in guiding the team to domestic success and European contention. Further highlighting the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent, PSG’s promising midfielder Desire Doue was named the Best Young Player in Ligue 1.

However, PSG’s dominance in the awards was not absolute, as Lille’s talented goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier edged out PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma to claim the Best Goalkeeper award.

PSG now stands on the cusp of achieving a historic treble. Their comfortable triumph in securing their 11th Ligue 1 title in the past 13 years underscores their domestic dominance. Looking ahead, they are set to face Inter Milan in the Champions League final on May 31, 2025. Prior to this European showdown, they will compete against Reims in the French Cup final a week earlier.

These upcoming matches present a significant opportunity for the Parisian club to culminate what has already been a remarkable season, further solidifying their position as the dominant force in French football since the takeover by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011.

Dembele’s ascendance to the top of French football represents a significant personal achievement. Following his transfer to PSG from Barcelona in 2023, he encountered periods of difficulty with injuries and inconsistent form. However, this season witnessed his resurgence as a key player, quickly becoming a beloved figure among the Parc des Princes faithful.

His consistent ability to both score crucial goals and create scoring opportunities for his teammates has garnered widespread praise from fans and football analysts alike. At the age of 28, Dembele appears to be reaching the peak of his career, and this prestigious award firmly establishes him among the elite players in European football.

The annual UNFP gala serves as a respected platform to celebrate the standout performers in French football. The winners are determined through a voting process involving players, coaches, and union members, lending significant weight to the accolades.

Dembele’s victory marks a break in Mbappe’s recent dominance, making him the first recipient of the Player of the Year award other than Mbappe since 2019, potentially signaling a shift in the landscape of Ligue 1’s top individual honors.

As PSG focuses their preparations on the crucial upcoming finals, Dembele’s exceptional form will undoubtedly be a key factor in their pursuit of further silverware. Fans are eagerly anticipating whether he can lead the team to more trophy success.

His journey from a promising young talent at Rennes to being recognized as France’s best player serves as an inspiration and adds to the excitement surrounding PSG’s exceptional season.
