John Thiongo, driver of Super Metro matatu that was captured navigating the wrong side of Thika Super Highway, will part himself with ksh 1 million to secure his freedom

In alternative, he will deposit ksh 300000 cash bail.

Thiongo and his conductor Kelvin Wanjau were arraigned before court to answer to traffic offense of  making a U-turn on Thika Super Highway.

He was also charged with driving a public service vehicle while under the influence of alcohol

The court heard that Wanjau did not have the requisite public transport conductor’s badge w.hen they committed the offense.

He however pleaded guilty of not having renewed his badge but denied the other charges,he was released a casha bail of bond of 300,000 or and alternative cash bail of shs 100,000

The footage that went viral depicts the bus boldly maneuvering against oncoming traffic, a blatant violation of traffic rules and a dangerous act that puts lives at risk.

Yesterday Super Metro published on its X account that the driver had been apprehended and that after being submitted to Central Police Station, he was later picked by Pangani Police where the incident was first reported.

“Following today’s incident of one of our drivers on Thika Road, we would like to inform the public that the driver has been apprehended by our company inspectors following his misconduct of making a U-turn on the Thika Super highway endangering other road users,” they tweeted.

“He was submitted to Central Police Station then later picked by Pangani Police where the incident was reported and from there, will be arraigned in court… Thank you for your continued support.”

From the video shared on X, a huge traffic snarl-up can be seen on the opposite lane – an indication that, maybe, the minibus was attempting to beat traffic.
