DStv, SuperSport Sh7.5 million boost for 2016 Barclays Kenya Open kitty


MultiChoice KenyaMultiChoice Kenya (via DStv and SuperSport) has announced a Ksh7.5 Million sponsorship package for this year’s Barclays Kenya Golf Open tournament which kicks off on Thursday 17 March 2016.

The sponsorship further deepens DStv and SuperSport’s commitment to golf and sport countrywide.

MultiChoice Kenya Corporate Communications Manager, Philip Wahome and SuperSport General Manager for East Africa, Auka Gecheo disclosed that over Sh3 million will go towards broadcast rights and production while the remaining Sh4.5 million will cover administrative costs incurred by organisers of the week-long event including setting up the first DStv Premium Golf Village at the venue.

MultiChoice Kenya Corporate Communications Manager said, “We have a long-term commitment to the Kenyan market through investment in local content and talent.”

“This partnership with the KOGL is a clear indication of our pursuit to support various existing local sports in the country. We have already invested in world-class facilities to enable us support the production of world-class content to give our viewers in line with developing sports and creating employment.”

“We have also taken up the golf village this year where we will showcase the mix of premium content available on our premium bouquet through interactive golfing activities and games for both children and adults.”

While signing the partnership deal with Kenya Open Golf Limited, the tournament’s Publicity and Marketing Director, Kathleen Kihanya appreciated the support by MultiChoice and SuperSport to provide broadcast of the tourney for lovers of the sport around the continent.

He said the six-year partnership has helped to showcase the tournament which has attracted top players from around the world for the three day competition.

Auka Gecheo further said “It is inspiring to note that we broadcast the KOGL over the last six years and we are encouraged to be a part of the development of the Golf and other sports in the country.”

He further stated that “SuperSport will fly in golf production experts from South Africa to Nairobi to oversee the production of the tournament. SuperSport Golf Presenter Richard Maspero will be part of the team.

The production will be edited to a 52-minute show that will be aired on SuperSport channels a week after the tournament. We will also run daily updates on our rotating news channel, Blitz for the duration of the event that has grown to become highlight of the sporting calendar not only in Kenya but also in the entire continent.”

Some of the exciting activities that MultiChoice and SuperSport will set up at the DStv Premium Golf Village include Let’s Play for the children’s fun area which will provide activities and coaching at the inflatable football pitch, mini golf, a golf simulator and touch rugby playoff area with screens for the golf simulation, live analysis and interview from SuperSport guest commentator and presenters.

DStv customers will also get a chance to sample the top of the range DStv Explora decoder, pay their subscriptions and buy decoders at the venue.

Ms. Kihanya lauded MultiChoice and SuperSport for having changed the profile of sports in Kenya by introducing a new perspective to television and broadcasting over the last 20 years.

He thanked the two companies for their continued contribution to the Kenya Golf Open Tournament and said he looks forward to this long term strategic support in years to come.
