The Government has flagged off the deployment of 6,484 healthcare interns, marking the start of the 2025/2026 internship cohort.

Speaking when he led the flagging off event at SHA House in Nairobi on Monday 30th June, 2025 , Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale said that , the move is in line with the government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The CS emphasized the need for a disciplined, compassionate and skilled health workforce to serve all counties with integrity.

“These interns will undergo 12 months of supervised, hands-on training at accredited centres. This milestone reflects the government’s dedication to strengthening healthcare under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), with a focus on quality, transparency and timely workforce deployment,” Duale said.

Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Ms Mary Muthoni, Director General for Health Dr Patrick Amoth, KMPDU Secretary General Dr Davji Attelah,KNUN Secretary General Hon Seth Panyako and CEO KUCO George Gibore were present during the event.

Meanwhile, at a public forum at KCB Grounds in Kajiado, Duale confirmed the closure of 35 health facilities found guilty of defrauding the Social Health Authority (SHA),and issued a stern warning to others engaging in malpractice.

“I encouraged the public to report suspicious cases, especially dual billing, via the 24/7 SHA hotline 147. To enhance awareness and accelerate Taifa Care registration, I pledged to ensure SHA benefits are communicated in local and simplified languages,” CS Duale stated.

He also reaffirmed the MoH commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through equitable, affordable care, highlighting the ongoing efforts to equip public hospitals under the National Equipment Service Program.

Duale who also visited Kajiado County Referral Hospital,flagged off over 100 digital devices in Kajiado County, adding to a previous 160, as part of the Ministry’s ongoing health digitization agenda under the Taifa Care rollout.

He underscored the role of the Comprehensive and Integrated Health Information System (CIHIS) in transforming service delivery by digitizing patient records, prescriptions and transactions.

“This shift is key to enhancing transparency, curbing fraud and improving efficiency in public health facilities,” Duale underscored.
