Nairobi county government has scrapped off the graduation fees being imposed on parents in public Early Childhood Development Education Centres after complaints from parents.
In an exclusive interview with Ghetto Radio news Executive Committee Member for education Janet Ouko says the ECDE heads have been using the graduation platforms to milk parents money yet the county government had declared early childhood education free in the entire county.
‘‘We have been going round telling parents that we don’t charge anything and that’s why we have stopped with immediate effect the vice,” said Ouko.
“Any parent who experiences that again to report to our offices so that we can take action against the centre.’’ Ouko added.
A receipt seen by Ghetto Radio News shows Buruburu one primary ECDE centre has been charging each pupil Ksh. 9,000 for graduation.
Meanwhile the county government of Nairobi is in process of hiring new ECDE teachers and according to Ouko the deadline for receiving application letters is 12th Oct this year.
She says the county will first absorb teachers who have been working with poor pay before they consider other applicants.
‘‘Teachers who have worked for years and have not been employed will get the first priority as directed by the governor.’’ She stated.
