The tales and scandals surrounding Music Copyright Society of Kenya(MCSK) is nothing new to our ears.Over the past years artistes such as Frasha and Ringtone have raised concern over inappropriate management of artistes’ money by the said board.
Now in a fresh twist of events,top trio band Elani have had enough from the board and decided to expose them badly.
You wont believe it when you learn that the “Barua Ya Dunia” trio earned Kshs 31,000/- only in the whole 2014 despite their songs receiving massive airplay on Radio,TV,Matatu not to forget their major concert at Impala grounds,that very same year! But how?????
“WE RECEIVED AN INITIAL CHEQUE WORTH KSHS 31,000 AS ROYALTIES FOR ALL OUR MUSIC PLAYED IN ALL RADIO AND TV STATIONS IN KENYA IN ONE YEAR,” narrated the trio.
So before confronting the MCSK board,the trio comprising intellects two lawyers and actuarist decided to carry out their own ground job in this relation.
“WE WENT TO LOCAL RADIO STATIONS AND REQUESTED INFORMATION ABOUT AIRPLAY AND HOW OFTEN ELANI PLAYED ON THE RADIO, AS WELL AS REQUESTING THEIR LOGS. THE CONTRADICTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO SETS OF LOGS WERE VERY VISIBLE.”
It is after learning MCSK has been underpaying them, Elani decided to face MCSK candidly and dig the truth.
“WE RAISED THIS INCONSISTENCY WITH MCSK AND WERE SUMMONED TO THE CEO’S OFFICE. THE MEETING ENDED UNRESOLVED. WE RECEIVED A CALL A FEW DAYS LATER WITH AN OFFER OF KSHS. 300,000 WHICH THEY CLAIMED WAS “COMPENSATION”,” they further explained to Mpasho.
Adopting a #ElaniSpeaks2016 hash tag,the trio now wants the board investigated or explain where all the money collected went.
