Environment activists in Kisumu County on Friday took part in the coordinated global climate strike that was happening across the globe.

The Kenya Environmental Action Network, Kisumu Environmental Champions held peaceful walks in Kisumu in a bid to create more awareness on environmental issues.

The focus for Kisumu walk peace was mainly on plastic and diapers pollution that is reportedly highly impacting Lake Victoria and the surrounding ecosystem.

They showcased some ways of repurposing plastics and alternatives in the effort of eliminating their production use and end.

While addressing the press Climate activist in in Kenya and Environmentalist Kevin Mutai said that they want global justice for the global issues that are affecting the citizen.

“Today we are doing a strike on climate change, we are all gathered here in order for our voices to be heard in terms of being given justices,” Mutai.

Kevin further stated that global Northern countries have been doing harm to the environment especially to global south countries by emitting carbon dioxide to third world countries.

Kisumu based social Justice activist Boniface Ogutu Aketch urged citizens that safe and a clean environment is a responsibility of every Kenyan.

“Having a clean and environment is up to us Kenyans, it is also up to us to start teaching our children on how to take care of the environment and that is what is termed as environmental sustainability,” said Ogutu.

In Kisumu, they said that they have witnessed a lot of pollution both from private sector and government institutions that have not been doing what is required from them.

“We want to urge everybody, county government, National government, National Environmental Management Authority to ensure that a clean and safe environment is maintained in Kisumu, “ added Mutai.

The activists will also come up with a policy which may help to make sure that pollution does not happen again.

“Before this we had meeting with UK embassy where we formed a team which is draft a policy to be talbed in Uk during meeting we are yet to attend,” Kevin told the press.
