Families In The Cold As NMS Demolishes Upendo Slums In Langata

More than 100 families will now spend night in cold following the demolition of Upendo slums next to the Wilson Airport by Nairobi Metropolitan Services.

The exercise has also left a garage being operated by over 30 mechanics demolished.

According to Moses Adama their families were forced to sleep outside after their building structures were demolished.

“The Nairobi Metropolitan Services Bulldozer arrived at around 7.30pm… when we inquired, the man in charge did not give us an elaborate answer and at around 8.00 pm the police land cruisers arrived and the demolition began at 10 pm with no single notice, “Adama told Ghetto Radio News.

“All our houses are on ground, our families are in the cold and our children did not report to school today… This is how we spent our Mashujaa Day,” he added.

Adama however, blamed the area political leaders for not coming to their rescue when they needed them most.

“As we speak the member of parliament Hon Korir is not yet here .. we have not reached our MCA and his phone is not going through but we still want to appeal to them to come on ground and assess the situation… everyone here does not have place  to sleep, what to eat and how to start a new life,” he said in an interview.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services has not issued any statement regarding the Upendo slum demolition despite accusations and blames from victims.

‘‘They  did not give us notice to vacate this place and even at the time the Bulldozers arrived, the  guy  in charge could not give us proper answer ,he was very elusive and the police officer supervised the demolitions until 1 pm,’’ another affected victim told Ghetto Radio News.

‘‘I have six children and I have nowhere to go to….we are asking the government to provide us with somewhere to hold our families for some time,’’ another victim said.
