More than 50 families have been left homeless following 12 am forceful evictions conducted by Nairobi city askaris.
The askaris raided the houses behind Pangani Police Station with lorries and bulldozers and they were demolishing windows, doors and forcing occupants out.
According to Maureen Siloui they had agreed with the governor that by 31st July all of them would have left, something that was not considered before they were evicted.
‘‘We had a meeting with the governor and we pleaded with him and yes he agreed that we stay up to 31st July but the notice he gave us was verbal , we are not opposing this urban renewal but are we are being handled as thugs ,we tried to tell them that our children are asleep they give us time nobody heard that.’’ She lamented.
They say not everyone was compensated and that some of them were told to wait after submitting the required documents to the office of the governor.
‘‘Yes we have those who were given Sh. 600,000 cheque as compensation but not everyone, evicting all of us is not right where are we going and we don’t have money?’’ they posed.
So far there is no memorandum of understanding MOU between the affected residents and the developers.
The residents claim that they have not been issued with development plan of the project.
Meanwhile our efforts to reach the county government officials over the matter still remain unfruitful.
The firms to carry out the uuban renewal project across the city are, Technofin Kenya, Green Ederman Property, Green Prestik, Jabavu Village, Stanlib Kenya and Directline Assurance Limited.
These firms are expected to put up more than 8,000 units across the city.
Old and New Ngara, Jeevanjee, Suna Road, Ngong Road Phases one and two, Bachelors’ Quarters and Pangani are among the estates targeted for the urban renewal.
