In Summary

  • The Stadium’s boundaries have been clearly defined, boasting ample parking space to accommodate visitors.
  • Namwamba’s pronouncement however goes against Kenya’s plan for the 2027 AFCON tournament

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has voiced his interest in Kakamega hosting some of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) matches should the joint bid by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for the 2027 tournament go through.

Namwamba’s statement came yesterday, following an impressive turnout of fans who gathered to witness the National Secondary School Games held at the stadium.

The bidding competition for AFCON 2027 hosting rights has intensified with Egypt, Botswana and Algeria also lining up to win.

“And because we are bidding for AFCON, if we are successful in that bidding, Kakamega has proven that it is a worthy location for an AFCON game,” Ababu Namwamba

But Namwamba’s stance is at odds with the government’s existing plan in that it has already submitted Kasarani,Nyayo and Eldoret’s Kipchoge Keino stadium as potential host venues.
