Two hostels have been burnt down and property of unknown value has been destroyed at the University of Kabianga in Belgut, Kericho County.
According to a lecturer who spoke on condition of anonymity, the cause of the fire could not be immediately established.
The lecturer said the fire began on the fourth floor of Hostel Six, burning down property of unknown value.
However it is suspected that the inferno was caused by an electric fault.
The incident happened the same day when the university was being reopened after being temporarily closed two weeks ago after students went on a rampage over delayed HELB loan disbursement and planned fee hike by the government.
Fire brigade from the County Government of Kericho and James Finlays Tea Company are currently at the scene to put out the inferno.
No casualties have been reported so far.
Students’ rampage
Two weeks ago the students went on rampage at the university over planned fee hike by the management.
The riots led to the temporary closure of the university by the management.
Rift Valley police boss Tom Odera said experts will still investigate the cause of the fire despite the reports of the electric fault.
“We have not recorded any casualty so far but property of unknown value was destroyed,” he said.
He added the experts will include officials from Kenya Power, county officials and police.
Hostel Six is Kabianga University’s biggest hostel so far.
Most of the property destroyed in the fire are student’s property. The cost of the destruction has not yet been established.
