Five people died yesterday after the walls of a gold mine they were working on collapsed on them in Bushiagala in Ikolomani sub county in Kakamega.

Eight more miners who suffered serious injuries have been admitted at the Kakamega county Referral Hospital.

The mine caved in at around 7pm due to heavy rains that have been pounding the area for the past few weeks.

Michael Magambo a miner says he managed to rescue some of his colleagues from the collapsed mine with the help of a friend.

Magambo who works in a different hole says that the mine caved in at around 4pm.

“I am a miner, it was around 4pm when I was called because me am working on a different hole. When I came, I found the mine caved in. I rushed in and found some miners still breathing, while some were already dead. With help of a friend, we manage to remove 8 people. One was taken to Shibwe, a local health center while some taken to Kakamega Hospital while five were dead,” says Michael.

The bodies of the five were taken to the Kakamega Mortuary.
