Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has unveiled plans for an enhanced 2024/25 FKF Premier League season, set to kick off on August 24.

Speaking at the FKF Gala Awards, Mwendwa highlighted significant improvements in the league’s broadcast arrangements and the overall development of Kenyan football.

Mwendwa confirmed that the new season will feature an increase in live broadcasts, with six matches to be aired every weekend, doubling the number from the previous season. He also hinted at the possibility of having all nine matches broadcast live in the future, reflecting the federation’s commitment to making football more accessible to fans.

“Our Premier League will get even better next season,” Mwendwa stated. “We will have six live matches every weekend, and we are still working with our broadcast partners to eventually air all nine weekend matches live on TV.”

In addition to expanding the men’s league coverage, Mwendwa announced that the FKF Women Premier League will also be featured on television for the first time. At least two women’s league matches will be aired live, a step up from the previous reliance on FKF’s social media platforms.

During the FKF Gala Awards, key players and teams were recognized for their achievements. Gor Mahia’s Austin Odhiambo and Kenya Police Bullets’ Lydia Akoth were named the Most Valuable Players (MVP) for the FKF Premier League and FKF Women Premier League, respectively. Other awards included the Golden Boot for Benson Omalla of Gor Mahia and Tumaini Waliaula of Vihiga Queens, as well as the Golden Glove for Kevin Omondi of Gor Mahia and a shared award between Judith Osimbo of Ulinzi Starlets and Sophy Akinyi of Vihiga Queens in the women’s league.

Mwendwa outlined the federation’s broader vision, emphasizing the importance of incremental progress in achieving long-term goals. He also celebrated the U17 women’s national team’s historic qualification for the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup, marking Kenya’s first appearance at the tournament.

Mwendwa expressed confidence in Harambee Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

He highlighted the team’s unbeaten record this year and the ongoing improvements in Kenyan football, which bolster the federation’s expectations for qualification.

However, he noted that Kenya’s home matches might not be played at Nyayo Stadium, which will undergo renovations in preparation for hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 AFCON.

Kenya’s participation in AFCON has a rich history, with the national team appearing six times, most recently in 2019. The upcoming renovations and focus on improving football infrastructure reflect the FKF’s commitment to elevating the sport in Kenya.
