Floods In Nairobi After Heavy Down Pour


A number of Nairobi areas have experienced floods following rains that have been experienced in the city for the past two days.

 Affected areas include Uhuru Highway, Bunyala Road, Langata Road, South C, Thika road, Mathare North and Umoja.

In Ruaraka Sub-County Mathare North Primary School  was heavily flooded affecting normal activities.

“They should look into the matter we have a very poor drainage system. The county must step up and address this immediately before we experience more floods,”Carlos Oduya Mathare North resident said.

“A school with such kind of floods I think we are doing badly …we risk contracting contagious disease like cholera,” he added.

CountyDirector for Environment and Natural Resources Mr. Paul Malawi says they have mobilized their team and mitigation measures are ongoing to curb further damages. County Director for Environment and Natural Resources Mr. Paul Malawi

“We are working together with other departments to ensure that issues like drainage is sorted in flood prone areas.. so far those area have been mapped  and we are going to see change immediately,’’ Mlawi said.

Pius Masai a disaster management expert poked holes into the county’s preparedness to deal with floods.

“We have not seen notable measures by county government. The drainage system is not in good condition and people must be very cautious,” Masai told Ghetto Radio News.
