Four bodies were retrieved from River Athi at Joska-Kamulu Bridge along Nairobi-Kangundo Highway on Friday morning.

Matungulu OCPD, Samuel Mukuusi said the victims drowned while crossing the flooded river last night.

The Kamulu Bridge was washed away after swollen Athi River burst its banks due to the heavy rains that pounded the region.

“The Machakos Emergency team has worked overnight to save lives and no one is stranded. We are sad after retrieving three male bodies on the Kamulu bridge on Kangundo road,” said Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua.

Mutua on Thursday evening said those trying to use the road to Nairobi or Machakos should turn back.
“Kamulu bridge has just been washed off by the River Athi, cutting off Kangundo road. Those trying to use the road for Nairobi or Machakos should turn back. Our engineers on Mombasa road are busy repairing the Mto ya Mawe bridge so that we can open the road,” said Mutua.
