The former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, gave an explosive, sensational interview. He poured his heart out, courting controversy and suspicion.
During the interview, he opined that the majority of Kenyans want Ruto out and warned that if the 2027 general elections results turn out in favor of President Ruto, the country would experience a post-election violence worse than 2007, where 1,500 lives were lost and over 500,000 displaced.
He also sensationally regretted that Raila Odinga saved President Ruto and the government from an ouster via the Gen Z led protests in 2024. He termed him an accomplice to a continuous looting of the country.

The live interview ‘For better, for Worse’ was held at his residence and hosted by Obinnah on his channel Obinnah Show Live on Sunday, May 18th, 2025.
Gachagua blames Raila Odinga for saving Ruto
During the interview, the former deputy president wished Raila kept off the conflict or joined the Gen Z led protest against the government. It should be remembered that he was deputy president before, during and after the protests in 2024.
“The Gen Z had cornered this man (referring to President Ruto) completely and Raila Odinga is the one who revived him. Had he allowed the Gen Z to deal with that matter, we would not be where we are today. So, he is the one who saved him.” Rigathi Gachagua admitted in the interview.
In critical analysis, Gachagua’s statement could be translated to mean that while he was the deputy president, he wished his boss President Ruto out of office. By blaming Raila for saving Ruto, he wished the president bowed down to pressure and resigned or was evicted from the state house via a ‘successful popular protest’.
It could also mean that according to him, President Ruto was and is the source of Kenya’s problems.
It is important to note that if President Ruto would have left the office, Gachagua would automatically assume the presidency as the country and government reorganized itself under him.
Suspicions raised, Ruto’s move and Raila’s motivation

By claiming Raila saved Ruto, could also mean that someone saw or knew the end game, but did not imagine Raila would ‘interfere’ to save the country or Ruto, or perhaps they underestimated Ruto’s political experience and wit as a deal maker. After the protests, Ruto has embraced the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Raila Odinga, signed a working MoU and at instances reminded rebel ODM members that he was, and still a founder member of the party.
It also raises suspicions; could there have been a plan to ouster President Ruto by ‘gas lighting’ the Gen Z to a genuine protest without their knowledge?
Could it be that it is this suspicion that motivated Raila to save the country and President Ruto? The former prime minister has been on record severally after the protests advising that nations that have undergone change of power through unconstitutional means have had difficulties stabilizing after. He would rather a revolution via the ballot for Kenya.
Treasonable and Treachery offense in Kenya
It is on record that President William Ruto on June 25th, 2024, denounced the Gen Z led protests that saw Parliament stormed as “treasonous” and promised expeditious response to the treasonous events.
“We shall provide a full and expeditious response to the treasonous events. We are assuring the nation of the government’s determination to secure the country.” President Ruto stated.
Are Gachagua’s utterances in the interview leading to a long-waited admission to treachery or treason? The government has always maintained that the Gen Z led protests were to an extent organized and funded.
Treason is a crime betraying one’s country either by attempting to kill or overthrow the sovereign or the government. A person then can be convicted of treason.
In Kenya, a person also commits treason if they instigate whether in Kenya or elsewhere any person to invade Kenya with an armed force.
Treachery is provided in section 43A of the penal code.
It provides that any person who, with intent to help the enemy, does any act which is designed or likely to give assistance to the enemy, or to interfere with the maintenance of public order or the government of Kenya, or to impede the operation of the disciplined forces, or to endanger life, is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life.
