Ghetto Lens: University Student Crowned Beauty Queen

Did you know that the winner of the 2022 Beauty of Africa International Pageant is a student at the University of Nairobi? Well Ghetto Radio’s Entertainment Chit Chat host Stella Anyango had a sit down with the 23 year old 4th year Bachelor of Economics student and got to know more about the beauty pageantry industry.

Messry Lungatso born and raised in in the town of Mumias in Kakamega County mentions that beauty pageantry is not just about physical appearance as the name suggests but more of giving back to the society through various abilities.

“It is about using beauty for a cause that can impact your society. It is about giving back to the society, empowering women and educating them and teaching about people being expressive and confident in their skin,” says the beauty queen.

With the beauty pageantry sector in the country gradually growing, the vibrant young lady feels like a lot more work has to be done in ensuring the sector flourishes and becomes more powerful.

“There is not as much support financially especially from the government. Pageantry should be just like any other sport which are sponsored by the government, it should also feature there since it promotes culture, heritage and tourism. This is  something that is very critical and should be recognized by the Ministry of Sports Culture and Heritage,”argues Messry.

Her modelling journey began back in 2020 where she was the first runners- up in the Miss Kakamega pageant with her second pageant being the BAIP 2021 which was held virtually due to the Covid pandemic.

After participating in various beauty competitions, she was crowned winner of this Africa international pageant alongside Ghana’s Prisca Abah who was named first runners-up and Miss Nigeria Okereke Juliana finished as the second runners-up.
