Traders in Nairobi’s Gikomba market are counting losses once again following a dawn inferno that razed down their stalls.

According to witnesses, the 3:00 am fire destroyed several structures at the cereals and mitumba sections opposite the Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) offices inside the market.

Phoebe Wanjiru, a trader at the famous second hand market told Ghetto Radio that many traders lost everything adding that even those living in the area lost their household items.

Nairobi County fire department arrived on scene to contain the fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

“The fire started from this side of COTU offices and spread towards the fish market. The cause of the fire is still unkown and as it is we have lost everything. There are also houses that have been burnt but luckily no one was hurt. They all managed to escape the fire.” she said

In February, a section of the market was razed down by an early morning fire which destroyed stalls with shoes and apparel.
