The Barclays Kenya Open golf tournament has received a boost as Safaricom Company has sponsored the competitions with a staggering amount of Ksh.3.5 million.
The annual competition is set to kick off on Thursday 23rd with a total of 156 golfers representing 28 countries across the globe. This year’s tournament comes as the 49th edition and will hold at the iconic Muthaiga Golf Club as 22 local golfers will battle it out with other pros for the maiden trophy.
Speaking at the sponsorship event held at Safaricom’s offices, the Company’s Director Consumer Business Sylvia Mulinge said that the telecommunications Company is privileged to be part of such an international tournament.
“It’s a privilege for us to be part of yet another internationally acclaimed golf tournament just a few days after we participated in the inaugural Karen Masters. Safaricom continues to be a proud supporter of sports in Kenya, and remains committed to playing our role in transforming lives through sports,” Mulinge said.
Safaricom has also pledged to support the International challenge by providing a media center with full kit. The media arena will be wireless and connected to the secretariat and other key areas for the period of the competitions.
Over the last three years, Safaricom has pumped in 15 million shillings into the tourney with a goal of making the nation a destination of the sport. The director further added that the relationship between the organizers of Barclays Kenya and Safaricom has been enjoyable.
“We have enjoyed a great relationship with the organizers of the Barclays Kenya Open and are optimistic that the golfers will deliver an excellent showcase over the four-day tournament,” Ms. Mulinge added.
