Gor Mahia and Kenya Police FC have both advanced to the second round of the continental qualifiers in their respective CAF competitions, following impressive victories.
In the CAF Champions League, Gor Mahia displayed a stellar performance against South Sudan’s El Merreikh.
Despite trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Gor Mahia turned the tables in the return match at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
After conceding an early goal in the 8th minute, Gor Mahia quickly equalized a minute later, thanks to a combination between Austine Odhiambo and Christopher Ochieng.
Alpha Onyango then put Gor Mahia ahead with a goal in the 21st minute. The momentum continued as Alphonce Omija scored following a set piece delivered by Austine Odhiambo, giving Gor Mahia a 3-1 lead at halftime.
The second half saw Gor Mahia extend their lead further with Ronney Onyango scoring twice in the 80th and 93rd minutes, sealing a dominant 5-1 victory on the day and a 5-2 aggregate win. With this result, Gor Mahia advances to the second preliminary round, where they will face Egypt’s Al Ahly SC.
Meanwhile, Kenya Police FC also made strides in the CAF Confederation Cup, securing a narrow 1-0 win over Ethiopia Coffee SC, courtesy of a goal from Rashid Toha in the first half. This result ensures their progression to the next round, where they will face Egypt’s Zamalek in a two-legged tie.
Both teams will be looking to secure their places in the group stages of their respective tournaments when the second preliminary round matches take place in September.
