Kenyan teams on club and international level have for a long time been eliminated by North African teams in Caf Competitions but the recent triumph by the Kenya Premier League Champions Gor Mahia seems to have led a shift from the status quo.
After dispatching Egyptian giants 4-2 in the opening Caf Confederation Cup group “D” match Gor beat Algerian side NA Hussein Dey 2-0 to go top of the Group.
Goals from Francis Kahata and Jacques Tuyisenge in the 84th and 86th minutes respectively proved decisive in the tie.
Speaking to Ghetto Radio Sports Gor Mahia midfielder Francis Kahata praised the team for the great win saying that things have changed adding that the East Africans have upped their game hence the results
“Things have changed the Arabs used to beat us whenever we met but I thank God nowadays we are able to beat them ,” he said.
Echoing his sentiments Kogalos assistant coach Zedekiah Otieno praised his team for a good performance saying that the club has invested a lot to achieve the fete saying that the task ahead is winning away.
Gor has not won away since going through the group stage of the competition since taking part last years.
last week they succumbed to a 2-1 loss away to Petro De Luanda of Angola.
Zedekiah, a former Gor Mahia player said that winning away has been difficult for the team because of many reasons other than the ability to play well. He added that there are many circumstances that hinder the teams performance especially against the North African teams.
He said that despite poor treatment by the teams from the North Poor Officiating is one of the biggest obstacle they face away.
