The government maintains its working on measures to solve the mysterious Gikomba fire outbreaks that have been making headlines.
The latest incident happened on the wee hours of Sunday morning despite heavy down poor in the city making it the 2nd fire outbreak this month.
The Kamukunji Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Samuel Kariuki, says they are upgrading access roads to the market and installing CCTVs on all corners of the market to increase the surveillance.
In the year 2020 , there have been at least five fire outbreaks at the open air market with unclear established causes.
‘‘We are once again on point in the market making sure that in case of fire all the areas are accessible the roads have been surveyed actually work is ongoing. Still the government has planned to install CCTV cameras in all corners of the market and as we talk one section of the market has CCTV camera’s in place.’’ Kariuki.
The sub county deputy county commissioner says the suspected cause of the fires is accidental but the government is investigating to establish precise causes.
Kariuki added that the Kenya Power has already established strategic areas to install floodlights in an effort to increase security in the market.
‘‘We have a multi-agency team working around the clock to ensure we have enough security, the Kenya Power will install floodlights but all these can not be done if we don’t have access roads.’’ Kariuki told Ghetto news.
This is in line with the government’s promise earlier this year to install CCTV, access roads and installation of floodlights.
