The government will now shut down  all short rentals houses which are not registered in  Airbnb platform  in a move to curb surge in insecurity of those premises.According to Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria they will target those who operates Airbnb without licences or other authorised platforms.

He warns that no one  will go scot free as the premises has become a crime scene hence need to regulate them.The CS said such transactions have also made it difficult for the owners to have data on who their customers are.

“The government will crack down on people offering such services outside the Airbnb or other authorized and licensed platforms.” he said.

“The government is very concerned about growing cases of crime and murders, mostly targeted at women in short-term rental spaces. Whereas most of these spaces are termed as Airbnb, they are not transacted through the Airbnb platform and thus there is no Know Your Customer (KYC) data collected, obviously a major security exposure,” Kuria said.

Femicide Demonstrations

Lobby  groups yesterday took to the streets to protest the on-going femicide in the country.The groups paraded in major cities and towns asking for government to  protect the vice.

In Nairobi groups converged at Jivanjee Gardens before proceeding to upper Central Business District. The latest  to be killed is Rita Waeni 20 year old. who was strangled to death and her body cut into pieces at Roy Sambu.

“It must stop because we have life and this life is sacred. Why should this golden and innocent souls perish because of killings by fellow man.We have a duty all of us to ensure women are safe.” Ruth Mungai said.
