  • The event has seen the restoration of a sense of hope and dignity among the victims, reaffirming the vital role of community-driven interventions in times of crisis.

In the heart of Mathare, one of Nairobi’s most densely populated slums, the Coalition for Grassroot Human Rights Defenders (CGHRDS) has once again stepped up to provide much-needed relief to those in dire straits.

In partnership with the Ford Foundation, CGHRDS undertook the monumental task of distributing food, mattresses, and other essentials to the victims of a recent fire in Mathare Mabatini, as well as those affected by floods and forceful evictions plaguing the slum.

The devastating fire, which left many families homeless, coupled with the relentless floods and evictions, has created a crisis that has overwhelmed the community.

In this challenging environment, CGHRDS, led by founder Rachel Mwikali, has been a lifeline for many.

Today’s distribution effort not only brought relief to the fire victims but also extended to activists from various parts of Nairobi who have been at the forefront of advocating for human rights in these turbulent times.

The distribution event was a heartwarming display of solidarity and compassion, with many beneficiaries expressing deep gratitude to the organizers.

Provision of food and mattresses, in particular, was a significant relief for those who had lost everything. The joy and appreciation were palpable, a testament to the impact of the initiative.

Rachel Mwikali, speaking at the event, emphasized the challenges faced by CGHRDS in their efforts to support the community.

“Kuna hio conversation ya kupatiana collective support na care kama activists. Sisi kucome through inamaanisha despite vitu kuwa ngumu tunaweza chip in for each other and support each other.”

She highlighted the misconceptions and challenges from the government, particularly the unfounded claims that the Ford Foundation was funding Generation Z-led demonstrations.

“Tunashukuru support ya Ford, wakati tulireach out kama one of the partners waliaccept also kutuwekea some funds aside.”

Mwikali clarified that the funds were strictly intended to support the survivors of floods and evictions, helping them rebuild their lives after being left in the cold.

This initiative by CGHRDS and the Ford Foundation has underscored the power of grassroots organizations in addressing the immediate needs of vulnerable communities.

The success of the event not only provided essential supplies but also restored a sense of hope and dignity among the victims, reaffirming the vital role of community-driven interventions in times of crisis.
