Police in Mathare have defended the killing youths in the area involved in crime.
Kiprono Lang’at Senior Superintendent of Police in Mathare Sub County says the police in the area have only shot dead criminal suspects when circumstances have forced them to.
“Some of these guys have real guns in during robbery incidents, some have homemade guns, when they release their guns and aim them at the police, we sometimes do not have an option but shoot back and kill them because the police are also protecting their lives,” said Lang’at.
Lang’at also stated that some of the criminal suspects have murdered their colleague following disagreements after robbery and then blamed it on the police.
“Some kill their colleagues when they fail to agree on probably how to divide the loot then blame it on the police,” he added.
Lang’at was responding to claims raised by area residents that the police have turned Mathare into a blood zone area by murdering innocent youth on claims of crime.
