High Court Clears Sonko To Run For Governor

The High Court in Mombasa has ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to clear former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to run for Mombasa Governor’s seat.

The three judge bench of Stephen Githinji, Olga Sewe and Ann Ong’injo noted that the Supreme Court had not yet made a decision on Sonko’s appeal for his impeachment.

IEBC had dismissed Sonko’s candidature stating that he is ineligible to vie following his impeachment.

Sonko’s legal team however argued that the governor had not yet exhausted avenues contesting his impeachment.

This comes just one day after Sonko met President Uhuru Kenyatta and committed to campaigning for him.

“For the few days I have been out of government, I am happy with President Uhuru’s job and even the job of NMS, to Nairobians, I kindly request you to support all Azimio aspirants in Nairobi,” said Sonko.
