Betting addiction has been named as one of the many mental illnesses affecting the youth in Nairobi.
Nairobi county mental health coordinator Stella Waruingi says many youth have plunged into depression after losing losing bets in various betting platforms.
Waruingi says advertisers use the aspect of motivation and good visuals in betting ads hence attracting many youth and plunging them into addiction.
“In betting, they use the aspect of reinforcement and motivation, one is with the visuals where in every 10 minutes there is an advert of someone who has won and this makes you continue betting and believing that you will win When you lose too much it may lead you to depression,” she stated.
Waruinge was speaking during the launch of & CUPS OF TEA App that provides online therapy and free support to people experiencing emotional distress.
The App gets to connect individuals with listeners trained to deal with depression and mental illness.
The listener then interacts with the person seeking help via an anonymous and confidential chat.
Globally, most young people with mental health problems lack the support and access to the care they need.
Unlike other illnesses, mental illnesses are “chronic diseases of the young” with over 75% manifesting by age of 24.
